Ordinary Glass Windows Not Cutting It?

Whether it’s the blazing hot days of summer or the crisp depths of winter, you want your home to feel comfortable. If it’s always too hot when you want it to be cool, or vice versa, it may be your windows causing the problem.

Many people think of insulation as what keeps your home’s temperature regulated. While the insulation in your walls and roof does play a role in this, the glass used in your windows does, too. If the glass is inefficient, it can exacerbate the temperatures outside and bring them inside— the last thing you want! So what’s the solution?

What is Low-E Glass?

Low-e glass stands for low emissivity glass. This type of glass has a metal coating on one side known as low-e coating, or low emissivity coating. This coating helps to increase the glass’ energy efficiency, reducing how much heat (in summer) or cold (in winter) can get through your windows into your home.

In winter, the heat inside your house attempts to escape outside through the windows. Low-e glass aims to stop this process in its tracks by acting as a barrier and reflecting the heat inside. On the other hand, in summer, the coating on low-e glass aims to reduce the amount of heat that comes inside through the window.

Low-e glass comes in two types:

1. Hard Coat Low-E Glass

Hard coat low-e glass, also known as pyrolytic glass, is made by fusing a thin layer of metallic oxide onto the glass while it’s still semi-molten. It’s typically very durable and hard to scratch the coating, which is where it gets its name.

2. Soft Coat Low-E Glass

Soft coat low-e glass is also called sputter coating. This involves placing multiple layers of optically transparent silver in a vacuum chamber, where it gets covered with a near-invisible coating.

Your Low-E Glass Questions Answered

What are the advantages of hard coat low-e glass?

Hard coat low-e glass is generally considered to be the toughest type of low-e glass. As such, it’s harder to scratch, so the coating tends to last longer. It can also be used on single-glazed windows, and makes use of passive solar heat gain.

What are the advantages of soft coat low-e glass?

Soft coat low-e glass offers a nearly invisible coating and high visible light transmission, giving minimal colour haze. It also has excellent insulating abilities and is generally considered to be the best low-e glass option for preventing UV ray transmission.

What’s the difference between low-e glass and double glazing?

Low-e glass aims to minimise heat transfer through its coating, while double glazing aims to do the same via a gap between two glass panes that is filled with air or gas.

While double glazing and low-e glass are different, they can be used together. Low-e glass can be used with uPVC double glazed windows for even better protection against heat transfer than simply using double glazing alone.
